"Punkers, Teenagers, and Revolutionaries"

Noah Levine is the son of Stephen Levine, a renowned healing and meditation teacher. Noah's book, Dharma Punx, is the intimate story of his journey from the streets and punker bars to a meditation hall. Speaking to young people who may be looking for their own path on this perilous road, Noah writes: "In truth, going against the internal stream of your own ignorance is way more rebellious than trying to start a cultural revolution. It's easy to hate and point out what's wrong, but it's much harder to free yourself from fear and attachment. Compassion is our only hope and wisdom our weapon."

Although this is a memoir, not a meditation how-to book, Levine does provide the meditation instructions that helped him develop a personal practice and the meditation techniques that he currently teaches in prisons and juvenile halls.

Speaking specifically to teenagers, writer Diana Winston advises: "Cultivating awareness is a revolutionary act. We are not conditioned to be quiet or to slow down, and we are not taught to be aware. Most of us don't know how to pay more than superficial attention. That's why being awake is so radical and goes against the culture. The funny thing is, it is also very simple." Winston's book, Wide Awake, gives teens detailed instructions for learning to meditate and a lot of practical advice about dealing with life, based on Buddhist training.
